The planning began for the establishment of a central research facility that would focus on the fundamentals of biotechnology as applied to the agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and food industries in Iwate Prefecture.

March 1990
Guidelines were established for the creation of Iwate Biotechnology Institute.

April 1990
The organizing committee was formed.

October 1990
The construction site was selected.

January 1992
The construction of the institute began.

February 1992
Iwate Biotechnology Research Center was established.

December 1992
The construction was completed. The research equipment procurement and installation was started.

April 1993
Iwate Biotechnology Institute was founded.

March 1996
The construction of Transgenic Plant Characteristics-Safety Assessment Building (Sealed and Open Greenhouses) was completed.

March 1997
Isolated Experimentation Field was completed.

June 1997
Accepted certification of STA fellow (Science and Technology Agency special researcher).

April 1998
Research divisions and groups were reorganized to 4 divisions and 5 projects system.

June 1998
5th Anniversary Celebration.

July 1999
Began hosting science and technology special research fellows.

April 2001
Collaboration with United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (Iwate University) initiated.

March 2003
Experimental wastewater treatment facility completed.

July 2003
10th Anniversary Celebration.

April 2004
Certified as a research institute eligible to apply for "Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research [KAKENHI]".

April 2007
Research divisions and groups reorganized to seven-research field system.

April 2008
Research divisions and groups reorganized from 4 to 3 Research Divisions.

May 2009
Radio Isotope (RI) facility abolished.

March 2010
Facilities related to RI renovated and converted to whole genome sequencing lab, metabolomics lab, and a common lab.

April 2012
Registered as a public interest incorporated foundation.

April 2014
Reorganization of research organization to 3 departments.

January 2018
25th Anniversary Celebration.
